Access the Abundant Power of Trees with Thermotek Windows

Thermotek Windows and Doors live and breathe their brand’s smart, sustainable philosophy. By recently partnering with Carbon Neutral, they are turning emissions into trees. The new Thermotree of Life program began with planting 600 trees in the Yarra Yarra biodiversity corridor. And with every new order, Thermotek will plant a tree on behalf of their customers.

Why invest in trees? Trees absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and release oxygen and water (photosynthesis). They store the carbon in their leaves, branches, stems, bark and roots. Approximately half the dry weight of a tree’s biomass is carbon. One tonne of C = 3.67 tonnes of ‘carbon-dioxide-equivalent (CO2-e). They clean the air we breathe. They filter the water we drink. They provide habitat to over 80% of the world’s terrestrial biodiversity.

Forests provide jobs to over 1.6 billion people. They are also the source of key ingredients in one-quarter of all medicines. They capture and slow down the water in places that are at risk of floods. A single tree can be home to hundreds of species of insect, fungi, moss, mammals, and plants.

Carbon Neutral carries out large-scale revegetation of degraded farmlands. The Thermotree plantings include mixed native species.

Woodlands and forests play a crucial role in cleaning and cooling the air. Their many gifts to humanity include:

  • Acting as natural water pumps to reduce dryland soil salinity.
  • These green pockets reduce erosion from wind and water.
  • Recycle nutrients for agriculture.
  • Support habitats for wildlife.

The Thermotree program aims to restore landscapes and reproduce natural ecosystems.

The plantings are in the northern wheat belt region of Southwest Australia. This is one of only 35 global biodiversity hotspots. They have a high number of plant and animal species found nowhere else in the world. These plants, animals and ecosystems are at extreme risk of destruction.

The Yarra Yarra was once vibrant with expansive woodlands of gum trees. But from the early 1900s Europeans have cleared more than 97% of the vegetation so they could farm. Now, parts of the landscape are not suitable for traditional agriculture.

The program will reinvigorate local communities and create a green corridor by linking:

  • Small patches of remaining vegetation; and
  • 12 nature reserves.

This will also reconnect coastal and drier inland habitats. The Yarra Yarra Biodiversity Corridor will be a 200km stretch of trees and other plant life.

More than 450 species of flora, insects and birds exist in the Yarra Yarra. 13 bird species of conservation significance as well as threatened species such as:

  • Malleefowl
  • Bush Stone-curlew
  • Carnaby’s Black-Cockatoo
  • Western Spiny-tailed Skink
  • the Woylie (Brush-tailed Bettong); and
  • 30 species of conservation-significant native plants.

The Thermotree Program contributes to the following United Nations’ Sustainable Development criteria:

  • Take urgent action to combat climate change and all its impacts.
  • Protect, restore and promote sustainable forests.
  • Combat desertification.
  • Halt and reverse land degradation and biodiversity loss.
  • Promote sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all.
