Does Double Glazing Reduce Noise?

It is common for home owners and builders alike to associate double glazing with temperature control; a correct association. However, there are many other benefits of double glazing, such as the reduction of noise pollution. Thanks to the insulating properties of the double glazed windows and doors, outside noise can be reduced throughout your home or office, helping to create a peaceful environment where you can work, rest and relax without distraction or disruption. This is especially useful for those living in busy areas, near main roads, or in office buildings where the noise pollution from outside may be more of a disturbance.

Read on to find out more about how double glazing reduces noise in your home.

So How Do Double Glazed Windows Help in Noise Reduction?

Thanks to its many insulating properties, double glazing can provide your home or office with a high level of sound insulation. First, let’s look at what makes a window or door double glazed.

There are a number of elements that make up a glazed unit. The general understanding around double glazing is that you simply add another pane of glass, which is just one element of the final product. Double glazing combines a number of elements, such as improved seals, acoustic glass, insulating gases and quality framing to produce a product that can withstand any weather and provide countless benefits to your home.

Noise travels into your building via vibrations, or sometimes even through poor seals or joints where air infiltration can occur. By creating an air gap between the two glass panels, and using thicker glass panes, double glazed windows help prevent the sound vibrations from travelling into your home.

At Thermotek, we use multiple Fusion Welded air chambers and high-quality Dual TPE  seals on all our products, to prevent any air from leaking into your home, bringing unwanted noise with it. Together these features combine to form a strong sound barrier, helping to dampen external sounds and deliver a much quieter indoor environment.

How Much Does Double Glazing Reduce Noise?

No matter if you are concerned with noisy neighbours, traffic noise or animals, double glazing can provide noise reduction of up to 70%, allowing you to live and work peacefully.

The thickness of the glass, the framing and the gap between the panes, all affect how much noise is reduced; however the framing also plays a very important role. No matter the quality of your glass, if your window framing isn’t made using a product with a high quality seal, such as uPVC, the amount of noise reduced will be much lower.

If your main motivation for investing in double glazing is noise reduction, it is worth reaching out to a specialised double glazing company, to discuss your options and decide on the best product for your home or build. At Thermotek, we are more than happy to help our clients understand the ins and outs of double glazing, and make the best decision for their circumstances.

The Benefits of Insulation

Insulation is a fantastic tool in preventing loud or disturbing noise from breaching your home, but did you know it also helps with energy efficiency?

Double-glazed windows have temperature control and retention properties, meaning you don’t need to keep the heater pumping in winter to feel warm, as the insulation keeps the heat inside your home! Up to 38% of your household energy is lost through doors and single glazed windows, so you can imagine the amount of power you will save with double-glazing. Not only do you reap the benefits of noise reduction, you also save money while living comfortably with a consistent temperature inside your home or office.

By choosing double glazing for your home or new build, you are also making a sustainable choice; less energy wastage improves your impact on the environment, and our uPVC framing is recyclable at the end of its lifespan. There are countless benefits to replacing existing windows by retrofitting double glazed solutions for your home or office.

Why You Should Choose Australian Made Double Glazing

At Thermotek, our quality double glazed windows and doors, combined with our uPVC frames, are designed and manufactured in Australia. We understand that the climate conditions Australian’s face differ from those overseas, where many other companies source their windows from. It is common for window products to be exported from Europe, where the conditions vary greatly; the resulting product cannot withstand our harsh climate the way they can in Europe and surrounding areas.

By providing a product that is able to withstand the harsh UV rays we see here in Australia, our customers are able to make the most of their windows and doors for years to come. Our showroom is based in Melbourne, and is available for viewings for any customers who would like to see the products themselves. Bookings are available for a consultation with Thermotek Design Consultant to help review your plans or quotation and help you make the most of your new windows.

Double glazing is a low maintenance, energy efficient option to reduce noise in your home, office, or new build. At Themotek, we are proud to offer quality, Australian products at a competitive price, to help all Australian’s reap the benefits of double glazing.
