Why Choose uPVC Window Profiles for Steel Frame Projects

Steel frame construction has become a lynchpin of modern architecture, prized for its strength, durability, and design versatility. Whether for contemporary homes or commercial buildings, steel frames are strong, durable and provide a clean, industrial aesthetic that’s hard to beat. However, the same qualities that make steel so robust and practical also pose challenges when it comes to energy efficiency and thermal comfort.

Steel is an excellent material for structural integrity but has one major drawback: thermal conductivity. It transfers heat much more efficiently than other materials, leading to thermal bridging—where heat bypasses insulation and escapes through steel components like studs and frames. It can also be a challenging material to make completely airtight.

Given the emphasis on sustainability – and the fact that new Australian buildings need to achieve 7 NatHERS stars under the Australian National Construction Code (NCC) – it’s essential to offset the thermal conductivity of steel by embedding other energy efficient design features throughout the building envelope. High-performance windows are of particular importance when it comes to optimising energy and achieving thermal comfort for inhabitants.

That’s where Thermotek uPVC window frames come in. They address the challenges of steel frame thermal bridging and airtightness, while offering durability, energy efficiency and sustainability.

Let’s explore why thermal bridging is an issue and how Thermotek uPVC window frames can offset them, making them the perfect complement to steel frame building projects.

What Problems Does Thermal Bridging in Steel Frames Trigger?

A major disadvantage of thermal bridging in steel frame constructions is increased energy transfer. Heat escapes in winter and enters during summer, increasing reliance on heating and cooling systems. Temperature fluctuations near steel frames also often result in hot spots in summer and cold spots in winter.

Thermal bridging can also lead to increased condensation and moisture risks, which may lead to mould or structural issues.

These challenges make it critical to pair steel frames with high-performance materials, such as uPVC window frames, which help mitigate these issues effectively.

What is uPVC?

It is a highly durable and low-maintenance material. Unlike regular PVC, uPVC does not contain plasticisers, making it rigid, strong, and resistant to warping, cracking, and corrosion.

Additionally, it is an eco-friendly material, being both recyclable and long-lasting, which contributes to reducing waste and the demand for raw materials. In fact, it grows strong the first 3-4 times it is recycled. These qualities means that it has inherently lower embodied carbon than other materials on the market.

Its rigidity further enhances structural integrity, making it a preferred material for secure installations in modern construction.

Here are the main ways in which uPVC offsets the steel frame and boosts overall sustainability in construction projects:

Energy Efficiency

uPVC is a naturally low-conductivity material, making it an excellent insulator. Paired with Thermotek’s double or triple glazing options, uPVC window frames reduce thermal bridging, help maintain consistent indoor temperatures, and ensure compliance with energy efficiency standards like the 7-star NatHERS rating.

Durability and Longevity
Steel frame construction is valued for its durability, and uPVC window frames match that strength. It is robust and long-lasting, gaining strength when it is recycled.

uPVC frames can also withstand extreme weather conditions, including rain, intense UV exposure, and temperature fluctuations, without warping, corroding, or fading.

Thermotek harnesses global innovation and tailors it to the challenging Australian climate. Our Aluplast-engineered frames are designed to handle impact without cracking, making them ideal for areas prone to storms or high winds.

Another advantage is that uPVC requires minimal maintenance. Unlike timber, which requires regular sealing or painting, uPVC frames maintain their quality with minimal upkeep—just a quick clean with soapy water. Timber is also prone to pests such as termites, which can cause expensive damage. uPVC is naturally resistant to pests, ensuring lasting performance.

With these benefits, Thermotek’s uPVC windows complement the durability of steel frames, delivering a product that will last for decades without compromising on performance or aesthetics.

Airtightness and Noise Reduction

Thermotek’s uPVC window and door system profiles, such as our Smart Slide range, are engineered to create an airtight seal, preventing draughts, leaks, and energy loss.

This airtightness is essential for steel-framed buildings, where even small gaps can compromise thermal performance.

Thermotek’s Smart Slide System offers superior sealing performance designed to meet the demands of steel frame construction. Featuring innovative multi-chamber sealing technology, the Smart Slide System ensures an airtight barrier that prevents draughts, moisture intrusion, and energy loss. Its advanced locking mechanism and precision-engineered seals guarantee maximum insulation, enhancing both thermal and acoustic performance.

It is also suited to large glass panels, which means that the system not only maintains airtightness but also ensures smooth, effortless operation—perfect for modern homes and commercial spaces.

Double or triple glazing further optimises energy efficiency

Thermotek uPVC window and door systems are also available in either double or triple glazing, which is another weapon in increasing energy efficiency.

These windows consist of two or three panes of glass separated by a layer of inert gas, which acts as an insulating barrier. This design significantly reduces heat transfer, keeping interiors warm in winter and cool in summer. The inclusion of Low-Emissivity coatings further enhances performance by reflecting heat back inside during colder months and blocking heat during warmer months.

In steel-framed buildings, double or triple glazing can play a critical role in maintaining consistent indoor temperatures. This not only improves energy efficiency but also reduces reliance on heating and cooling systems, leading to lower utility bills.

Additionally, the layered structure of these windows helps to block external noise, creating a quieter, more comfortable indoor environment. Thermotek’s double and triple-glazed uPVC windows combine this advanced technology with airtight seals, ensuring optimal thermal and acoustic performance, while complementing the sleek design of steel-framed structures.

Stylish Designs to Complement Steel Frame Building Projects

Steel frame buildings can often favour minimalist, contemporary designs, and Thermotek uPVC windows fit this aesthetic perfectly. They offer clean lines, customisable finishes, and the option for expansive glass areas, enhancing the overall look of a building.

Thermotek’s Boutique Series is where world-class performance meets sophisticated design. These windows offer a premium aesthetic with slim, clean profiles that maximise natural light and elevate architectural style.

The Boutique Series allows for customisation to suit any design vision, from large glass panels that enhance open-plan living to contemporary finishes that seamlessly integrate with steel-framed exteriors.

They are also available in a range of architectural and woodgrain finishes. Not only do they deliver on sleek, stylish aesthetics, but they also maintain exceptional energy efficiency and airtightness, proving that functionality and beauty can go hand in hand.
