8 Myths and Fun Facts about uPVC Windows and Doors

PVC window with mosquito nets, against the background of the yard with green trees, on a summer day.

Are you confused about uPVC double glazed windows and doors? Have you heard many things about uPVC and often wonder if they are true? We are here to set things straight.

Let’s start with some statistics. You can expect insulation improvements of up to 73%. Reduce noise by up to 70% and increase your property’s value and security. Prevent up to 70% of heat loss in cooler climates and up to 77% heat gain in warmer climates.

uPVC is a superior alternative to traditional timber or aluminium framing. You can lower your energy bills and control the temperature of your home. You can improve the comfort of your home and use less energy.

Read on to learn more interesting facts and myths about uPVC.

TRUE OR FALSE: uPVC is plastic.

This is a huge myth about uPVC. The truth is salt is the main component of uPVC, not plastic. Invented in the early 1900s, uPVC stands for “unplasticised polyvinyl chloride.”

TRUE OR FALSE: uPVC is not strong enough or long-lasting.

This is another myth. The durability and strength of uPVC provide long-lasting sturdiness. Our superior Aluplast profiles exceed global standards in many ways. Thermotek windows and doors can withstand harsh sunlight, powerful winds, and heavy rain.

They are resilient, rigid, and popular as frames for double glazed windows and doors. Thermotek’s uPVC is air and watertight, lightweight, easy to install and transport.

TRUE OR FALSE: uPVC causes condensation.

If you allow enough airflow in your home, this will reduce your level of condensation. Condensation is inevitable with any materials used to seal up your home.

TRUE OR FALSE: uPVC is terrible for the environment.

This is another common myth. The truth is uPVC is much better for the environment than many other materials. This is because it has no plasticising components. Since it’s not plastic it is perfect for those interested in eco-living and helping the planet. uPVC is also recyclable resulting in low waste. What a bonus! No trees are necessary to create uPVC, either. And of course, the extra thermal insulation from uPVC reduces your energy consumption.

Thermotek has a commitment to our environment as well as yours. We have introduced a way to give back to the planet with our Thermotree program. Learn more here.

TRUE OR FALSE: uPVC is expensive.

Affordability is important to Thermotek. That’s why we offer solutions that suit various budgets and needs. uPVC is more affordable than you think. When compared to other materials such as wood or aluminium, uPVC is more affordable.

TRUE OR FALSE: uPVC is unsafe, harmful, toxic and flammable.

Our uPVC systems keep you and your family safe and secure all year round. They are BPA-free, burglar-proof, with extra strong galvanised iron.

As a fire retardant, it is not flammable in any way. Of course, wooden window frames are a lot more flammable.

Often used in medical and dental equipment and procedures, it is a safe material to use.

TRUE OR FALSE: uPVC cannot fit the character of your home. It looks like plastic and is only available in black or white.

Check out all the colour and styling options for our windows and doors. Our woodgrain finishes do not look like plastic at all. Our options suit a variety of home decor styles.

TRUE OR FALSE: uPVC expands in high temperatures, and the colour fades.

These are other big myths. Yes, it is weatherproof, even in Australia’s harsh climate. It does NOT expand in high temperatures. This is because it does not contain a plasticiser. (It is plastic that tends to expand in hot temperatures, not uPVC.) Regardless of the weather outside, it will not crack or change shape, colour, or size.

Low maintenance, and doesn’t ever warp under intense heat or erode over time. No touch-ups or coatings to prevent bacteria or chemical erosion. Reliable longevity that doesn’t flex at all. Whereas timber or aluminium windows are high maintenance.

Another benefit is a decrease in glare and your floors will not fade from sun damage, etc.

Our products include the unique “Cool Colours Technology.” This assists in reducing heat transfer even more. Despite strong direct sunlight, Cool Colours prevent the frame from overheating. Colours remain brilliant and fresh, for many years to come.

BONUS MYTH!
TRUE OR FALSE: uPVC is not suitable for Australian weather.

Australian conditions need tough, durable products to best suit the changing, extreme, climate. Thermotek’s products have higher levels of UV stabiliser. Higher levels of UV stabiliser mean the uPVC won’t fade over time under the harsh UV rays across Australia.

Thermotek windows and doors are Australian made. Whereas other uPVC window companies import uPVC from Europe or China. While these suit the climate in Europe, they can’t withstand Australian conditions. The weather in Australia is harsher, putting much higher strain on the windows. That’s why Thermotek, as Australians, manufacture products for the Australian climate, in Australia.
